Hair trends have defined eras, groups and movements. In this series we will explore how hair made powerful statements!!!

AFRO 

In the late 60’s in the United States of America, the Black Panthers movement fought for equal civil rights. It promoted self-respect among Afro-Americans and their Afro hairstyle was a symbol of pride of their African origins. The historical context was full of tension, Black Americans wore their Afro as a political statement.

PUNK  

The Punk movement began in the early 70’s. Two bands made Punk music famous: the Ramones and the Sex Pistols. Punk’s culture promoted individual freedom, gender equality, in fact women were first visible in rock scenes through Punk rock. Punk’s ideology was an anti-establishment one and “do it yourself” their ethic. Punk’s influence on hairstyles and fashion spread around the globe. Punk hair trend is still inspiring old and young people nowadays.

RASTA

The Rastafari movement began in Jamaica during the 1930s following a prophecy made by Marcus Garvey, a black political leader. The development of Reggae music between the 60’s and the 70’s made Rastafari audible and visible to an international audience. Bob Marley is one of the most important figures in Rastafari. His long rasta braids have become a distinctive symbol shared with other Rastafari or Reggae lovers.
