ADILA’s concept of genuine beauty holds in one word: harmony! Our mission is to encourage you to seek yours by combining a positive mindset, consistent self-care with organic cosmetics, a balanced diet, and living in a sustainable environment. In this section, we intend to bring to your attention the impact of cosmetic toxins on our health and on planet Earth. In particular oxybenzone, octocrylene, and parabens. These chemicals have been used by the majority of sunscreen brands for the past 50 years. You may find it listed as ingredients on your favourite solar protection cream or spray. Here is the bad news: these substances destroy the coral reef.
Many Island countries located in the Pacific, rely on tourism for income. The Republic of Palau is standing out for boldly taking steps to protect their piece of Earth: they publish a ban on “reef-toxic” chemicals. From January 1st 2020, provision will be made to prevent tourists from entering the country with sunscreen products containing oxybenzone, octocrylene, and parabens. Anyone importing or selling the banned sunscreen is facing confiscation and a fine of $1,000. It is the first time a state fights pollution by condemning specific toxic ingredients. Authorities from Palau want to preserve their country reputation as the first destination for diving and preserving the environment is part of their long-term strategy. In 2015, the Republic of Palau become a member of the Climate Vulnerable Forum, officially committing to protect 80% of its water resources. In 2017, the nation established an eco-promise known as the Palau pledge. It is stamped in local and foreign passports.
The small Republic of Palau proved to be a world pioneer in environmental protection. Its inspiring example demonstrates that, when there is a political will, effective measures can be taken to protect the Earth, our common heritage. It is also possible to produce cosmetics free from harmful chemicals. The more informed we are about the detrimental effects of toxins, the more conscious our purchases will be. Manufacturers will be forced to produce chemical free cosmetics and sell it at an affordable price if this is what the “market” wants. We, the “consumers” are more than a “market”. We are living creatures on a living planet. Respecting life should be the priority. If you agree, share this article, let’s make ourselves the majority that changes the rules of the game!
With much love,
Adila
