The plastic we throw away is killing us!

January 3, 2019

At ADILA, we believe that human health, beauty, and survival are intrinsically connected to our impact on the Planet Earth. Our intention is to raise awareness and induce positive change. As Chris Packham puts it: <everything we do affects the world in some way>.
Plastic has been around since the beginning of the 20th Century. It made its way into every aspect our lives. Think about it: the water bottles, the toothbrushes, the food packaging, the cosmetics bottles, the furniture, the tampon applicators, the shopping bags, the cotton bud sticks, the plastic cutlery, the straws, the ball-point pens. We are surrounded by plastic.
So, we should not be surprised by the horrendous scale of plastic pollution in the oceans. In 2017, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation estimated that by 2050, there would be more plastic in the oceans than fish! Beaches around the world are displaying on a daily basis our carelessness. We failed to reuse plastic properly. Plastic is persistent. It does not biodegrade, it brittles into tiny pieces called microplastics. When fishes ingest it, they die, or they absorb the toxins which travel up the food chain to us. Moreover, Plastic is made of fossil fuels. It leaks chemicals such as BPA (Biphosphenol A) which mimics estrogen in the body and has been linked to hormonal imbalance, infertility, breast, and prostate cancer.
What can you do?
Check the packaging and only buy items in recyclable containers. Use reusable bags for your shopping. Collect every piece of plastic you notice wherever you go and put it in a recyclable bin. Share the health risks related to plastic with your family, friends, and colleagues. Every little action counts. Each #2minutebeachclean collected around 2Kg of plastic, leading to 130 tonnes of litter being removed from the British coastland. Your decision to fight plastic intoxication can go a long way to save the planet and humanity!

With much love,

Adila
